Next Steps

1. Set Up Student Account at My51²è¹Ý

Create an account at using the 51²è¹Ý student ID login credentials that you received in your email acceptance message.

2. Submit Deposit

Pay your deposit by credit card or e-check through (also accessible via ) by April 15. The deposit is $250. The deposit is nonrefundable and will be held in your student account and credited toward your tuition.

After your enrollment deposit is processed, you will receive an email confirmation with advising and registration information.

*If your admission includes conditions of acceptance, it is your responsibility to meet those conditions according to the specified schedule.

1. Submit Official Transcripts

If you have not done so, please submit your final official transcript(s) to 51²è¹Ý by the deadline listed at the top of this page. Final officials transcripts may be mailed by you or by your undergraduate institution.

2. Register for Classes

Contact your graduate advisor for instructions on class registration.

Summer and fall class schedules are published in  by late February.

The CAS graduate experience extends beyond the classroom. Students can work in our state-of-the-art labs in our new Hall of Science, intern at notable institutions in DC, and engage with on-campus centers or the 51²è¹Ý Museum.

Defer Enrollment

Graduate applicants who have been offered admission to 51²è¹Ý may request to defer their enrollment for up to one year. Deferral requests are not guaranteed and must be approved by the respective program's department. Candidates who are approved for a deferral do not have to file a new application.

International Students: Inability to receive a visa is typically not grounds for a deferral.

To submit a deferral request, email CASGRAD@american.edu by August 1 (for fall/summer)or November 1 (for spring).
